Abstract
413,365. Printing machines. MILLS, T. J., QUICK, C. G., and BALL, D. A., 109, Borough Road, London. Jan. 19, 1933, No. 1816. [Class 100 (ii).] Inking-apparatus.-In an ink-feeding mechanism for printing-machines including a pump system for forcing ink from a receptacle containing a float controlling an inlet valve to an ink-distributing arrangement, means are provided for positively advancing the ink in the receptacle to the pump system. The means may take the form of a reciprocable impeller device or a screw conveyer, which serves to advance the ink after delivery by the supply pipe so as to ensure that no accumulation of ink takes place below the float, but that it is fed to the pump plungers at a rate which is dependent upon the press speed. The receptacle 1 receives ink from a pipe 5, which is provided with radial ports 6 controlled by a float 9<1>, and the outlet 3 leads to the pumps 2 which in turn communicate with ports 4 in a pump rail 4<1>, through which the ink passes to the distributing ducts and drum. The ink is positively advanced to the passage 3 by a plate 10 hinged to a rod 12, its limits of movement relatively to the rod being determined by abutments 13, 14. The rod 12 is reciprocated in the casing 1, by a lever 16 pivoted to a fixed bracket 18 and connected at one end by a slot to a pin 20 carried by the rod 12, and at the other end to a shaft 27 reciprocated from a driven part of the printing-machine, conveniently the shaft of one of the vibratory ink rollers. The pin 20 is guided by a slot 22 in a fixed bracket 23, and in order to permit the rail 41 and the attached parts to move to and from the distributing-drum, without disconnecting the pin 20 from the lever 16, the pin is extended beyond the lever to allow the necessary relative movement. In operation, as the rod 12 moves to the right, the plate 10 takes up the position shown and displaces ink to the passage 3, which as the rod moves to the left, the plate rotates to a position parallel to the rod 12 and so passes freely through the ink.
