Abstract

408,942. Circular knitting-machines. GRIEVE & CO., Ltd., T., and GRIEVE, T. S., Queen Street, Leicester. Oct. 17, 1932, No. 28969. [Class 74 (ii).] A superposed needle cylinder machine has auxiliary transfer cams in both cam boxes acting upon differentiated sliders under control of an auxiliary pattern device. The ordinary transfer cams may also function for patterning. An auxiliary cam 2 moves radially from an outer inoperative position to various inner operative positions the sliders operated on being determined by the depths of recesses 8. An ordinary transfer cam 6 movable radially, acts on the transfer butts 10 which differ among themselves in length. These two cams operate in conjunction with a fixed cam 11 which engages the knitting butts 12. This causes those sliders selected to engage a dividing cam D which deflects them outwards to liberate the upper hooks of the needles. An auxiliary transfer cam 13 and an ordinary transfer cam 14, also movable radially, act on knitting butts 17 and transfer butts 18, of variable length. A cam disposed at a lower level than usual, acts on the tails of sliders associated with instep needles and elevates these during heel and toe knitting. The tails of the sliders for the heel and toe needles have recesses so as to avoid engagement with this cam. The transfer cams are movable into their working positions against the action of springs 2<a>, 6<a>, 13<a>, 14<a>. Bits 19<a>, 19<b>, on an auxiliary drum 19 act on levers 29, 35 and thus operate the top auxiliary and main cams through levers 27, 25, and 34, 32 fast on rockshafts 26 and 36, links 24 and 31 and bell crank levers 20 and 30. Cam bits 19<c> act on a lever 43. This actuates a lever 41, loose on a rockshaft 33, which engages a lever 40 fast on a rockshaft 39 on the other end of which a lever 37 operates the cam 13. Bits 19<d> act on a lever 49 which actuates a rockshaft 46, through a lever 47. A lever 44, fast on the rockshaft, operates the cam 14, levers 51 and 58, acting on groups of levers 29, 41, 47 and 34 respectively enable all cams to be operated by cam bits 50<a>, 50b, on the main controlling drum 50. The auxiliary drum 19 is rocked by means of cams on the cylinder driving gear 67, and pawl and ratchet mechanism. When half-round pattern effects are produced the drum 19 is moved axially by a plunger 80, operated by cam bits 88 on the drum 50, through a bell crank lever 84. A bluff, operated by the main drum, can render the pawl 73 inoperative for predetermined intervals, with the transfer cams in an inoperative position. Specification 15008/00, [Class 74], is referred to.
