[Class 74 (ii).] To reverse plate in circular machines by the co-operative action of needles and sinkers, the needles being preferably controlled in the usual manner, each sinker has mounted below it a jack 43 provided with a number of upper and lower butts or surfaces for engagement by cams. Connected to the sinker cam 9 is a bar or plate 13 by which it may be moved radially in a slotted plate 15 depending from the sinker cap plate 16. This is done by a lever 17 operated by connections from the pattern drum. Immediately prior to resumption of circular knitting, e.g. after knitting stocking heels and toes the cam 9 is projected radially to act on butts 42 of the jacks 43 and position them for further selection. The jacks may also be acted on by other cams, such as 54, 55, and 58 .. 64. Multiple cams 65 act on frangible butts 66, 67, under selective control. Selected jacks having been advanced by a cam 68, the butts 11 of the companion sinkers are acted on by a cam 8 and thus moved outwardly. Subsequently the selected jacks are retracted by the interaction of shoulders 69, 70. By engagement of a cam 72 with these jacks, they and the companion sinkers are then advanced. During this movement the nibs enter between the body and plating yarns for plain plating or above the yarns for reverse plating. Subsequently the jacks and sinkers are retracted by cams 76, 77. Cams 79, 80 restore to position sinkers and jacks accidentally displaced, e.g. during reciprocation. In making heels &c. the jacks are projected by cams 72, 82 during forward (anticlockwise) and reverse (clockwise) strokes respectively. At the start of heel or toe knitting the cam cap 5 is itself advanced by connections from the pattern drum, in order that the sinkers may reach the knocking-over position before the needles have descended, with the result that the heel and toe yarns are measured over the backs of the sinker nibs.
