Abstract

407,843. Setting projectile fuzes. SCHWOB FRERES ET CIE SOC. ANON., La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. June 1, 1933, No. 15868. Convention date, June 5, 1932. [Class 9 (i).] Relates to apparatus for winding and timing projectile clockwork fuzes at one and the same time by means of a rotating key or setting member, the rotation of which is limited by a stop independently set for the time desired. According to the invention, electro-mechanical means are provided for clamping the projectile in the mouth of the apparatus, coupling the timing member of the fuze to the setting member of the apparatus, driving the setting member to set the fuze, and replacing the setting members to zero, means being provided to cause these operations to be performed in correct sequence. As shown, a toothed wheel 2, Figs. 1 and 2, carrying a stop 36 is set by a hand wheel 3 to the desired time shown by an indicator 5 controlled from a distance. A projectile 9 is inserted in the apparatus and establishes a connection between leads 34, 35 ; a signal 33 lights up, and a coil 20 is energized and attracts a plunger 19 to the position shown, where a lever 18 connected to the plunger causes a device 15 of the apparatus to grip the timing member 14 of the fuze, while another lever 16 connected by a rod 17 to the lever 18 causes a cam 13 to clamp the projectile in the apparatus as described in Specification 407,845. In this position of the plunger 19, a finger 28 thereon makes contact with a conductor 27 in a circuit of a motor 10, and this motor, which is supplied with current from a control station, drives a toothed wheel 6 round to time the fuze until a finger 39 on this wheel encounters the stop 36, when contacts 41, 43, Fig. 2, represented by 31 in Fig. 1, are separated, thereby breaking the circuit through the signal 33 and the coil 20. The plunger 19 is drawn back by a spring 21 uncoupling the device 15 from the fuze, releasing the clamping action of the cam 13 on the projectile, and transferring the finger 28 from lead 27 to lead 26. This reverses the motor 10, which returns the toothed wheel 6 to the zero position with a stop 37 thereon against a fixed stop 38, in readiness for a fresh fuze setting operation if another projectile is inserted in the apparatus.
