[Class 30.] A safety razor of the pivoted blade type having a roller 5 geared by pinions 6, 7 to the blade holder spindle 4 for reciprocation on a rigid sharpening surface has the blade 9 positively retained in the shaving position by spring-controlled locating means the application of pressure on which releases the blade into the sharpening position, the locating means automatically re-engaging the blade when the latter is swung angularly into position after completion of the sharpening operation. As shown in Figs. 1, 4 the locating means comprise plungers 10 with blade-engaging slots 11 at their inner ends. These plungers are urged inwardly through apertures in the side plates of the frame 3 by blade springs 12 secured at 14, and are retracted by a thumb-and-finger engagement with buttons 16 sliding on fixed pins 15 on the outer sides of bent links 13 which are fastened on the outer ends of the plungers. The thumb- and-finger engagement is maintained throughout the sharpening operation. Chamfered parts 17 on one side of the slots 11 allow the blade to snap automatically into the correct shaving position with respect to the guard 3<a> after the buttons 16 have been released and the razor has been drawn sharply across the stropping surface towards the operator. A single control member near the end of the handle may replace the two buttons 16. The blade, which may be of the wafer or hollow-ground type, engages a holder 8 of the clip or other type by means of a slot 9<a> in one of the side plates.
