Abstract

407,696. Reading desks and stands. WHITEHEAD, W., and SCHOLEFIELD, W., (trading as WHITEFIELD UTILITIES CO.), 155A, Hampton Road, Southport, Lancashire. Sept. 17, 1932, Nos. 25861/32 and 7123/33. [Classes 52 (iii) and 52 (v).] A reading-stand comprises a cross-shaped base, in one arm of which is a cup-like recess for receiving the leg of a chair or settee. As shown in Fig. 1, the right-angled cross-like base a has in one arm a cup-shaped hollow or recess a<1>, and in the opposite arm a socket a<2> for a telescopic pillar b, c supporting eccentrically a disc d of wood. This supports a pivoted ashtray, and also a book slope f with a page-holding device consisting of an approximately U-shaped wire h with its lower ends inturned. The book slope consists of a board f which has attached to its side edges a U -shaped bar g; the horizontal part of this bar passes under the disc d and holds the board f at the slope indicated. Fig. 5 shows a modification comprising two crossshaped bases a connected by a baseboard i. Each base has a telescopic upright b, but one carries a lamp j. The castor socket may be formed in the part i or in an extension of one of the arms of one of the cross-like bases a. In a modification, the two discs d, over which a larger tray may be inverted, are used ; the book slope may be slipped over one of the arms of the base so as to serve as a newspaper &c. holder.
