Abstract
405,286. Supports for electric incandescent lamp filaments. ADAMS, M., c/o Colony Club, 62nd Street, HOWE, R. F., 102, West 85th Street, both in New York, and NUTTING, P. G., 3216, Oliver Street, Washing- ton, both in U.S.A. July 26, 1932, No. 21110. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1931. [Class 39 (ii).] In a high-powered incandescent electric lamp having an exhausted bulb and a filament comprising a plurality of coiled parallel sections connected in series, the filament is carried by a pair of frame members which function as leading-in conductors and which have means for supporting each section of the filament in such a manner as to allow free expansion of the section, tilting of the filament relatively to the bulb, when the lamp is used in other than a vertical position, being prevented by a member connected to the frame members and engaging a restricted portion of the bulb opposite the end thereof at which the frame members enter. In one construction the frame members comprise pairs of wires 3, 4 and 5, 6, formed as shown and sealed into a restricted portion 2 of the bulb 1. The ends of the filament 19 are connected to the frame members and the sections of the filament are supported by hooks 13-17 which are mounted on zirconia blocks 9, 12 carried by the frame members. The hooks 13-17, which are formed by wrapping metal strip around the blocks 9, 12 only loosely engage the filament, as shown in Fig. 2, in order that the sections may freely expand independently of the frame members. The sections may be further supported by a zirconia block 22 which is carried by the wires 3, 6 and has metal projections 23, each of which is fastened, preferably by welding, to the middle coil of a section. To support the filament and frame members when the lamp is used in an inclined or horizontal position, the bulb is formed with a rectangular constriction 27 adapted to receive loosely a metal sleeve 26 which is carried by uprights 24, 25 secured to the zirconia block 9. A metal cap 28, having an insulating base 29 through which the wires 3-6 pass, may surround the restricted portion 2 of the bulb, the cap fitting into a metal cup 30 formed with overlapping fingers 33 which grip the cap. The cap and cup are retained in position by nuts 32 which are threaded on the ends of the wires 3-6. In a modified construction the cap is of insulating material.
