404,167. Directive wireless signalling. LORENZ AKT.-GES., C., 1, Lorenzweg, Tempelhof, Berlin. March 16, 1933, No. 7978. Convention date, March 31, 1932. [Class 40 (v).] In a system for landing aircraft a radio transmitter S, Fig. 1, is adapted to produce a radiation diagram A, the lower surface of which is in the form of an obtuse - angled cone adapted to be used as the landing curve for an aircraft B. The radiation is emitted from a single vertical dipole aerial having an electricallength of one quarter of a wavelength, fed by a coupling coil near its lower end which is earthed. The receiver on board the aircraft comprises crossed frame aerials or dipoles R1, R2 feeding amplifying detectors G1, G2 which feed the crossed coils of an indicating instrument J1 adapted to show the relative strengths of the signals in the aerials R1 R2 and hence the direction of the transmitter. An instrument J2 indicates the total energy in the aerials R1 R2 and can be used to keep the aircraft on a landing line of constant field strength, and also with the system in which two transmitters transmit characteristic signals in different directions on the same wavelength.
