Abstract
401,783. Protected metal sheets. BURNS, J. E., 460, Glenwood Drive, Ambridge, and ROBERTSON CO., H. H., Grant Building, 3rd Avenue, Pittsburg, both in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. June 14, 1932, No. 16807. [Class 140.] In the formation of protected metal sheets covered on both sides with asphalt &c. impregnated fibrous material, e.g. asbestos, which is protected by a layer of asphalt, the unprotected side edges are provided with covering means surrounded by the final coating of asphalt &c. so that the sheet can be bent near the side edges without rupturing the protective coating. The metal sheet 10, coated on both sides with asphalt impregnated asbestos 12, 13 secured thereto by a thin layer of asphalt is enclosed at one or both side edges by a channel shaped member 20, preferably of metal, provided with perforations 23 which allow the final covering 18 of asphalt to penetrate and unite with the asbestos layers, the final coating being carried round the members 20. Where only one side edge is protected by a member 20, the other is enclosed in the asbestos coating. In a modification, the member 20 may be made of open meshed fabric and provided with a core along the base of the channel.
