Abstract
The coagulation of a dispersion of an albuminoid, e.g. casein, in ethyl alcohol or other volatile solvent is retarded by adding acetic or other anhydride before the addition of a coagulant, such as a solution of trioxymethylene in an alcohol such as methyl alcohol, with, if desired, traces of caustic potash. After adding the anhydride, the dispersion may be electrolysed in presence of hydrogen peroxide.ALSO:Varnishes are produced from solutions or dispersions of albuminoids, e.g. casein, by the addition of acetic or other anhydride to act as a retardant before adding a coagulant such as a solution of trioxymethylene in methyl alcohol. After the addition of the anhydride, the dispersion may be electrolyzed in the presence of hydrogen peroxide till evolution of gas ceases, when a further addition of the anhydride is made, or water-immiscible alcohols, such as iso-amyl, butyl, or benzyl alcohol may be added, some of the ethyl alcohol originally used being allowed to evaporate. Glycerine or other plasticizer, and a solvent mixture consisting of amyl acetate, acetone, terpinol and turpentine, may also be added.
