Abstract
Fertilizers are prepared by decomposing raw phosphates with that quantity of nitric acid necessary to convert the phosphate into mono-calcium phosphate, treating the mixture with ammonium sulphate, filtering off the precipitated calcium sulphate and undecomposed gangue and evaporating the solution to dryness to form a mixture of ammonium nitrate, mono-ammonium phosphate and residual calcium sulphate. The nitrogen content of the dry residue is then adjusted by dissolving out to any desired extent the ammonium nitrate by means of liquid or gaseous ammonia, and that part of the decomposed matter which contains the di-ammonium phosphate formed is reconverted into mono-ammonium phosphate by the addition of free acid, e.g. nitric, hydrochloric or sulphuric, either with or without the simultaneous addition of other fertilizing salts, e.g. potassium salts such as the chloride, sulphate or nitrate or mixtures thereof, with or without other fertilizing salts. The dry residue may be completely freed from ammonium nitrate by the ammonia, then mixed with the necessary quantity of acid and, if required, potassium salts, and finally mixed with any desired proportion of the ammoniacal solution of ammonium nitrate, the acid being added in sufficient quantity to neutralize the ammonia and to reconvert the di-ammonium phosphate into mono-ammonium phosphate.ALSO:Fertilizers are prepared by decomposing raw phosphates with that quantity of nitric acid necessary to convert the phosphate into mono-calcium phosphate, treating the mixture with ammonium sulphate, filtering off the precipitated calcium sulphate and undecomposed gangue and evaporating the solution to dryness to form a mixture of ammonium nitrate, mono-ammonium phosphate and residual calcium sulphate.
