Abstract
395,186. Cables and pipes. WILLIAMS, A. W., Redhill, Arnold, Nottinghamshire, and MACKENZIE, I. S., Ravensworth, Duckmanton, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Sept. 8, 1932, No. 25049. [Class 36.] Electric cables, haulage cables, and hose pipes are sheathed or armoured by winding on them one or more flattened tubular strips of plaited or interworked metal wires. To increase the flexibility of the sheath the strip may have fibrous material, such as rubberized cotton worked into it and the metal wires may be loosely worked together. To prevent stretching of the strip as it is wound on the cable &c., an inextensible cord or wire may be incorporated centrally within the strip during its manufacture. Fig. 2 shows an electric cable having an outer sheath 11 of helically-wound flattened tubular strips 10. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, a trailing cable comprising power cores 115, a central core 23, and an earth core 16 is surrounded by a rubber covering 22 over which is applied a winding of flattened tubular strips 10 covered by a rubber sheath 21. The strip winding 10 may function as an earth or pilot conductor instead of or in addition to the central core 23. In order to connect two lengths of the flattened tubular strip, or to repair a broken length, the adjacent strip ends 101,102, Figs. 5 and 7, are gripped in a C-shaped clip 24 and then soldered or brazed together, a piece of mica 23 having previously been inserted under the clip. The power cores of the trailing cable described in Specification 390,571 may be sheathed by a flattened tubular strip winding.
