[Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i).] A vertical carbonization retort has carbonization, intermediate, and cooling zones A, B, C respectively, Fig. 4, steam inlets r, s being provided to the cooling zone in which is a coke discharge chamber D equal in capacity to one half, or other aliquot part, of the cooling zone which is proportioned to hold the coke from a complete charge in the carbonization zone. It thus takes two or more emptyings of the discharge chamber D to discharge the cooling zone, and allow the whole of the charge in the carbonization zone to occupy the cooling zone, Fig. 7. The contents of the intermediate zone B are at the bottom of the coke discharge chamber and resting on the discharge door p, which is never unduly heated, when hot coke falls into the intermediate zone from which a supply of water gas is always ensured. The discharging means comprises a gate d attached to a hinged wall e, and operated by a rack and pinion g, f, gastight casings i, j being provided. A discharge door k has a curved surface n on which rests a protector plate p. During discharge, Fig. 4, the wall e is swung aside, and the door k rotated to allow the plate p to drop. In a modification, the capacity of the coke discharge chamber is varied by the provision of walls adjustable towards or away from the opposite wall, or the wall e may have a pivot at h, Fig. 11, which is adjusted by a screw h<1>.
