Abstract
390,642. Two-and four-stroke oil engines. ERLANGSEN, C. F., Camps- Bay, South Africa. April 13, 1932, No. 10592. Convention date, June 17, 1931. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] Pairs of double-ended pistons 3, 4 work on one crank-pin through a common gudgeon 5 and connecting-rod 9. Attached to the bearing 8 for the rod is a pump plunger 11 which compresses air in a small cylinder 12 to ignition temperature. Fuel is injected into this air through the hollow centre of an air admission valve, and burns in the small cylinder, the rise in pressure lifting the spring-pressed head 13 and allowing the rich charge to enter the main cylinders by the ports 16, 17. The lower ends of the pistons supply the main air charge to the combustion chambers in the cylinders 1, 2 ; a cross-connection 39 equalizes the pressure in the pump chambers. The engine may work on the two or four stroke cycle and both ends of each cylinder may act as power chambers; in the latter arrangement a cross-connection is provided to allow equalizing the output.' Pistons, cooling.-The pump plunger 11 is cooled by water from the cooling jackets, the flow being from the telescopic connection 23, 25 through a bore 28 in the gudgeon 5 to a pipe 99 in the interior of the plunger. The water leaves by a second bore 28<1> in the gudgeon and another telescopic connection 24, 26 to the outflow 29.
