[Class 38 (iv).] A lighting installation for buildings comprises one or more lamps in each room of the building fed from a main source of supply of electric current, one or more auxiliary lamps in each of the passages and communicating rooms, and means in each room for controlling the energization of all the auxiliary lamps. In the arrangement. shown in Fig. 2, the main lamps L are supplied from the lines A, B under the control of switches S, and the auxiliary lamps l are fed from a third wire C which can be connected to the line A through the operation of a relay R. Closure of any one of the auxiliary switches s effects the operation of the relay through a control circuit a, b supplied with weak current. In a modification, the auxiliary lamps l are energized from the control circuit a, b. In a further modification, Fig. 4, for use with 'alternating currents, main switches s<1> control the energization of the main lamps L through relays R<1>, while the auxiliary lamps l are supplied from the secondary winding of a transformer T, the primary of which is connected to the lines A, B through a relay R on operation of one of the auxiliary switches s<2>. The auxiliary lighting may be switched off after a predetermined time by means of a time switch.
