Abstract
388,576. Road signals for controlling traffic. BOOR, T. A., Long Street, Ashville, Ohio, U.S.A. March 4, 1932, No. 6614. [Class 118 (ii).] Road signalling-apparatus for controlling traffic comprises a lamp 29, a stationary lamp housing 26, signal windows 17 in an outer housing 10, rotating indicators 42 traversing reflecting windows, a shutter 30 reciprocable over the lamp housing 26, and having pairs of vertically arranged lenses 31, 32, adapted for movement thereover, one of the lenses representing a " go signal and the other a " stop " signal, and means for reciprocating the shutter 30 upon each complete rotation of the indicators 42. The housing 10 may be suspended from a cable by means of a bail 14 and a fastening 16. The windows 17 are arranged in four separate compartments, and are provided with ground glass lenses 18. The rotation of the indicators 42 is brought about by a motor 33 driving a stud shaft 35 on which is mounted a gear wheel 38 meshing with a larger gear wheel 37 revolvably mounted on a shaft 36, which also carries a bevel gear 41 meshing with bevel gears 45 at the extremities of the shafts 43 which carry the four indicators. The reciprocation of the shutter 30 is brought about by an intermittently operated trip mechanism 50. The shutter 30 is attached by,means of a bail 54 to a lever 52 pivoted at 53 to a support 51, a spring 55 being arranged to hold the shutter normally in a raised position. The other end of the lever 52 is attached to a rod 57, which is subjected to intermittent upward and downward reciprocation by being pivotally connected at its lower end to a rotatable crank and crank shaft. Intermittent rotation of the crank shaft is effected by its connection with a geneva gear 62 in the slots 65 of which there moves a pin 59 pivotally mounted at its other end to the rotating gear wheel 37.
