Abstract
459,326. Signalling by visible signals. CHANCE BROS. & CO., Ltd., and HALLETT, L. B. H., Glass Works, Smethwick, Birmingham. Dec. 16, 1935, No. 34827. [Class 118 (ii)] [See also Group XX] Apparatus for indicating the wind velocity to aircraft pilots comprises a pair of jointly and relatively rotatable screens e, f, masking a light source d, joint rotation of the screens giving rise to rotary light beams the number of which is varied by relative rotation of the screens, the latter being effected by the wind. The inner screen e has a number of equally spaced apertures g around half its surface and is secured to a frame h rotatably mounted on a vertical spindle i, and continuously driven through gearing l, k by a motor m. The outer screen f, which carries a series of wind cups w covers half the screen e and is rotatably mounted on a spindle o at the top of the screen e. The screens e, f, are connected together by a spiral spring p so that the screen f lags behind the screen e by an amount depending on the wind speed and uncovers a corresponding number of apertures g in the screen e. The lamp d and reflector a are fixed to the top of the spindle i. Lamps u are mounted on the upper end of the spindle o.
