Abstract

385,688. Stays. TIBBLES, H. J., Brodsworth, Blenheim Crescent, Leigh-on- Sea, and RELY-A-BELL BURGLAR & FIRE ALARM CO., Ltd., 49A, Wilson Street, Finsbury Square, London. Oct. 12, 1931, No. 28340. [Class 65 (i).] A casement stay-bar slidably engages a sleeve or like member and is provided with a keyoperated lock that serves to lock the sleeve, the bar and a fixed pin or other anchoring device in relatively fixed relation from which they can be released only by actuation of the lock by the_key. In one form, Figs. 2 and 3, applied to a stay of the pin-and-hole type, the stay-bar 1 is of inverted channel section having holes in its upper side for engagement with a fixed pin 3, and the sliding member is formed of a casing 4 with a base member 4a embracing the stay-bar 1 and also having a hole for engagement with the pin 3. The part 4a has pivoted to it two arms 7, pressed together by a spring 9 to engage a groove in the pin 3, as shown, to lock the stay in engagement with the pin ; the casing 4 has a key barrel 5 with an extension 6 which, when rotated, forces the arms 7 apart to allow the stay and member 4 to be lifted off the pin. In order to facilitate bringing the holes in the stay-bar and the member 4a into register, depressions or holes may be formed in one side of the stay-bar, in line with the main holes in the top, to engage with a spring-pressed plunger 13 in the member 4a. In another form, Fig. 6, the sliding member 32 carries a spring-pressed pin adapted to pass through one of a series of holes in the stay-bar 30 and to enter a hole 39 in a keylock 40, the bolt of which, when operated, engages a groove in the pin to prevent withdrawal. The pin is withdrawn from engagement with the stay and lock against its spring by a knob 37 ; it may be rectangular in section, being rotatably mounted to engage a correspondingly-shaped hole 39. A lug 43 on the member 32 engages under a flange 42 on the lock to give additional resistance to any force tending to lift the stay out of engagement with the lock. In a further form, Fig. 5, applied to a stay of the toothed-and-notched type, the fixed engagement member comprises a pivoted casing 21 through which the stay-bar 20 slides, the bar and casing having corresponding toothed engaging surfaces. The sleeve 24 sliding on the bar has an extension 25 which serves to wedge the stay-bar in engagement with the casing 21, as shown, and the member 24 can be locked in this position by the bolt 26 of a key-lock on the casing 21. To form an additional locking means, a latch may be mounted on or formed integral with the sleeve 24 to engage the underside of the casing 21.
