Abstract
A safety lock device that can be assembled with existing household windows that have sliding upper and lower sashes and a latch mounted on the sashes. The device consists of a hollow member secured to one sash so as to overlie the latch and permit access to the latch only through a side opening in the hollow member and a cover or slide member telescopically mounted on the hollow member for movement to a position blocking the latch access opening. Provision is made for locking the slide in this position.

[57] ABSTRACT A safety lock device that can be assembled with existing household windows that have sliding upper and lower sashes and a latch mounted on the sashes. The device consists of a hollow member secured to one sash so as to overlie the latch and permit access to the latch only through a side opening in the hollow member and a cover or slide member telescopically mounted on the hollow member for movement to a position blocking the latch access opening. Provision is made for locking the slide in this position.
5 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures SAFETY LOCK DEVICE FOR WINDOWS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION able to have a means to prevent an unauthorized manipulation of such a latch in order toprovide additional security for the window. It is also desirable that such means be incapable of being removed by a screwdriver when in operation so that an intruder may not defeat its operation by removing it from the window.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention solves the problem of insecurity of such a latch by providing a slide or cover member supported by a stationary member which is mounted over the latch on a window sash. When the slide is in a withdrawn position with respect to the stationary member, the latch cam is accessible for manual manipulation and the windows may be opened and closed freely. When the latch is closed, the slide may be moved to a covering position with respect to the stationary member, in which position it may be secured by a padlock or other locking device. While in such a position, the latch is inaccessible to manual manipulation and the means of mounting the stationary member to the window sash is also inaccessible, so as to effectively preclude the window from being opened without first unlocking the padlock.
Further objects, features and advantages of this invention will become apparent form a consideration of the following description, the appended claims, and the accompanying drawing in which:

FIG. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 2, but on a larger scale, showing the safety lock device when it is locked and in position; and
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the safety lock device when it is unlocked and the slide is in a withdrawn position, shown in assembly relation with an unlatched window latch.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT.
Referring to the drawings in more detail, the safety lock device of this invention, indicated generally at 10,
is shown in FIG. I positioned on a window having a lower sash 11 and an upper sash 12. The sashes 11 and 12 have the usual cross rails 14 and 16, respectively, which register when the window is closed and which are secured by a conventional latch 17. The latch 17 consists of two principal parts, namely, a cam member 18 pivotally mounted on a base plate 19 attached to the cross rail 14 and a hook-shaped clip 20 attached to the cross rail 16.
The safety lock device 10 comprises a generally rectangular hollow member 22 and a movable slide 24 of generally inverted U-shape telescoped within the member 22. The stationary hollow member 22 has a base section 26, a rear side 28, a top side 30, and a front side 32. The base section 26 has a pair of screw holes 38 for a purpose to appear presently. The rear side 28 is formed with an opening 42 shaped to accommodate the latch 17, which projects into the member 22 through the opening 42 when the member 22 is secured to the cross rail 14. The top side 30 is formed with a pair of holes 44 which are in vertical alignment with the screw holes 38 in the base section 26. The front side 32 is formed with an irregularly shaped horizontal slot 46 which provides manual access to the latch 17. The front side 32 also has a locking hole 50. A key actuatable bolt lock assembly 51 is secured to the front side 32 so that the bolt 52 of the assembly will project through the hole 50 when the assembly 51 is actuated.
The movable slide 24 has a front side 53, a top side 54, and a rear side 56. The front side 53 is formed with a hole which registers with the hole 50 when the slide is in a telescoped position shown in FIG. 5. The rear side 56 has a horizontal slot 62 so that the slide 24 will not interfere with latch 17 when the slide is in its telescoped position. In the assembly of the device 10 with the window, the hollow member 22 is attached to the lower sash cross rail 14 by inserting screws 64 through the holes 44 and into the holes 38 with the movable slide 24 in the withdrawn position shown in FIG. 6. The latch cam 18 is now accessible through the horizontal slot 46 and can be manually manipulated so as to disengage it from the latch clip 20.
When the slide 24 is in the telescoped position (FIGS. 2 and 3), the latch 17 is inaccessible because the slide 24 closes the access slot 46 and prevents manual gripping of the latch 17. Furthermore, access to the screws 64 which attach the device to the sash is precluded because the top side 54 of the slide 24 blocks the holes 44 in the top side 30 of the hollow member 22. The slide 24 may be secured in the telescoped position by using a padlock or other conventional locking device 51 which will pass through the registering holes 50 and 60 so as to prevent the slide 24 from being withdrawn.
When it is desired to open the window, the lock 51 may be disengaged and the slide 24 removed to the withdrawn position shown in FIG. 6 so as to permit the latch cam 18 to be disengaged from the latch clip 20.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety lock device for a window having sliding upper and lower sashes with registering cross rails secured by a latch, said device comprising a hollow stationary member adapted to be attached in a fixed position to one of said cross rails at a position adjacent said latch, said member being formed to provide access to 2. A safety lock device according to claim 1 wherein said slide is telescopically supported within said hollow member.
3. A safety lock device according to claim 1 wherein said stationary member further includes slot means on its front side located generally horizontally along said one cross rail and enabling manual manipulation of said latch when said slide is in the withdrawn position.
4. A safety lock device according to claim 1 wherein said stationary member includes a base section having screw holes for attachment to the upper surface of said cross rail, said member also having holes in its top side which are vertically aligned with said screw holes so as to provide access thereto when said slide is in the withdrawn position and to preclude access to said screw holes when said slide is in the covering position.
5. A safety lock device according to claim 4 wherein said stationary member is generally rectangular in cross section and has slot means in the front side thereof providing access to said latch in the withdrawn position of said slide, said member having an opening in the rear side thereof into which said latch projects.
Claims (5)
1. A safety lock device for a window having sliding upper and lower sashes with registering cross rails secured by a latch, said device comprising a hollow stationary member adapted to be attached in a fixed position to one of said cross rails at a position adjacent said latch, said member being formed to provide access to said latch, a movable cover member comprising a slide slideably supported by said stationary member for movement between latch covering and withdrawn positions, said cover member blocking access to said latch in the covering position thereof and enabling access to said latch in the withdrawn position thereof, said cover and stationary members having holes therein which are in registry when said cover member is in said covering position, said holes being adapted to receive a padlock or the like so as to secure said cover member in its covering position with respect to said stationary member.
2. A safety lock device according to claim 1 wherein said slide is telescopically supported within said hollow member.
3. A safety lock device according to claim 1 wherein said stationary member further includes slot means on its front side located generally horizontally along said one cross rail and enabling manual manipulation of said latch when said slide is in the withdrawn position.

A safety lock device according to claim 1 wherein said stationary member includes a base section having screw holes for attachment to the upper surface of said cross rail, said member also having holes in its top side which are vertically aligned with said screw holes so as to provide access thereto when said slide is in the withdrawn position and to preclude access to said screw holes when said slide is in the covering position.
5. A safety lock device according to claim 4 wherein said stationary member is generally rectangular in cross section and has slot means in the front side thereof providing access to said latch in the withdrawn position of said slide, said member having an opening in the rear side thereof into which said latch projects.
