Abstract

378,147. Control of D.C. motors. JOHNSON, E. M., 33, Poplar Grove, Brooklands, Cheshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. June 22, 1931, No. 18054. [Class 38 (iii).] The excitation current for the motor 1 and generators 3, 4 of a Ward-Leonard marine propulsion system is furnished by an exciter 14, which may be separately or self excited and driven by a motor 13 or a prime mover. Adjustment of a rheostat 16 causes variation in the excitation of the motor, but the simultaneous adjustment of an interlocked rheostat 17 counteracts the variation of voltage appearing at the bushes of the exciter 14, so that substantially constant excitation is supplied to exciters 9, 10 supplying the fields of the generators. A Ward-Leonard controller 18 is interposed in the supply to the exciters 9, 10. The exciters 9, 10 can be replaced by a single machine, and the rheostat 17 can be adjusted to suit the number of generators in operation.
