Abstract
Cyanogen compounds are removed from gases by treatment with alkali (e.g. ammonium) polysulphide liquor containing polysulphides higher than the bisulphide, sufficient excess of said higher polysulphides being maintained to prevent the formation of monosulphide. This is effected by adding before or during the washing process, not less than one molecular equivalent each of sulphur and ammonia for each cyanogen group present in the gas in the form of dicyanogen or hydrocyanic acid. Complete removal of cyanogen compounds is effected even at temperatures above 30 DEG C., e.g. 60-70 DEG C. A wash liquor of the correct composition should, on acidification, give immediately an opaque suspension of sulphur.
