Abstract
A road making material is made by a process comprising the known step of coating a fluxed aggregate with a relatively soft bitumen, with or without the addition of fines, and subsequently adding pulverized asphalt composed of hard bitumen, and finely divided mineral matter. The asphalt contains preferably calcareous mineral, as an example Boeton asphalt containing 40 per cent relatively hard bitumen (penetration 15-20) and 60 per cent calcareous material, is used. The use of a hard asphalt permits a larger amount of fines (up to 20 per cent) to be used than in the prior process. The amount of asphalt added is 1-5 per cent and varies with the amount and hardness of the bitumen used to coat the fluxed aggregate. In an example a clean stone graded to give a close aggregate is coated with a volatile fluxing oil and then with from 5-10 per cent soft bitumen (penetration not less than 75 or more than 350) at 250-300 DEG F. 10-15 per cent of fines and 1-5 per cent of Boeton asphalt is added, the asphalt being pulverized so that it will pass a sieve having 80 meshes to the linear inch.
