Abstract

370,585. Centrifugal pumps. GILKES & GORDON, Ltd., G. and CREWDSON, E., Kendal, Westmorland. Feb. 27, 1931, No. 6135. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii).] In a centrifugal pump the runner 14 is formed with vanes 21, Fig. 5, on one side, which are encased in a shrouding 22. A diaphragm 10 contains a channel 13 extending 240‹ round the diaphragm, around which fluid is propelled from an inlet 8 to an outlet 9 via pockets 5, 6, separated by a diaphragm 4. The suction and discharge ports of the channel 13 are arranged as near the centre as possible. The channel 13 is shallowed radially opposite these two ports. Fluid leaking over the shrouding 22 is drained through a small hole 23, but sufficient fluid is retained behind the runner 14 to balance the axial thrust of the vanes. The latter may be made alternately long and short. In an alternative arrangement a double-sided runner is used, and the suction and delivery pockets in the casing walls extend 270‹ and 90‹ approximately respectively.
