Abstract

Helianthrone derivatives are made by oxidation and condensation of 1-oxy-2-oxy (or alkoxy)-9-anthrones or the corresponding dianthrones; products containing alkoxy groups may be hydrolysed to the corresponding oxy compounds by treating with mineral acids. In examples (1) 1 - oxy - 2 - methoxyanthrone is treated with iodine or arsenic acid in pyridine, or boiled with nitrobenzene; a dioxydimethoxyhelianthrone is obtained, which may be converted into tetraoxyhelianthrone by heating with hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydriodic or sulphuric acid, and (2) 1 : 2-dioxyanthrone is converted into a tetraoxyhelianthrone by heating with iodine in pyridine or by boiling in nitrobenzene. The dianthrones, which may be used as parent materials, are obtained by air-oxidation of the corresponding anthrones in the presence of methyl or ethyl alcohol and caustic potash or ammonia, or by oxidizing with ferric chloride in acetic acid.
