Abstract

Vat dyes are made by condensing pyrene with phthalic anhydride or its substitution products, excepting sulpho salts. The phthaloylpyrenes obtained may be converted into further vat dyes by oxidation, by treatment with sulphur chloride (S2Cl2) in the presence of aluminium chloride, or by the introduction of halogen, nitro, amino, or substituted amino groups. In examples (1) pyrene is condensed with phthalic anhydride in the presence of aluminium chloride; the phthaloylpyrene obtained dyes cotton in orange shades, (2) 4-bromphthalic anhydride and 4 : 5-dichlorphthalic anhydride are similarly condensed with pyrene to give products dyeing in red-dish-orange shades, (3) phthaloylpyrene is chlorinated with sulphuryl chloride in nitrobenzene, (4) the products of example 2 are condensed with a -aminoanthraquinone to yield products dyeing in brownish-black and reddish-brown shades, (5) phthaloylpyrene is nitrated and the product reduced; the aminophthaloylpyrene obtained dyes in olive-green shades which can be diazotized and developed on the fibre, (6) the aminophthaloylpyrene of example 5 is treated with benzoylchloride in nitrobenzene; the product dyes in yellow-brown shades, (7) phthaloylpyrene is oxidized with chromic acid in glacial acetic acid; the product dyes in yellowish-brown shades, and (8) phthaloylpyrene is heated with sulphur chloride (S2Cl2) and aluminium chloride, the product dyes in reddish-grey shades.
