Abstract

366,243. Hand-operated brakes. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd. and HAWORTH, H. F., Motor Works, Hough Lane, Leyland, Lancashire. Jan. 3, 1931, No. 303. [Class 103 (i).] Brake-operating mechanism particularly for motor vehicles comprises a hand-lever formed in two parts 7, 8 hinged together, a drum 6 co-axial with the lever pivot and connected to the brake mechanism, and a hand brake 9 surrounding the drum and adapted to be tightened or loosened to connect the lever to or disconnect it from the brake mechanism, by the rocking of one part of the lever relative to the other. The brake mechanism is operated by a shaft 2, Fig. 2, having a boss 3, loose on which is the lever 7 and to which are bolted ratchet wheels 4, 5 the latter having formed upon it the drum 6. The ends of the band 9 are connected, one end 10 adjustably, to the lower end of the lever 8. A spring 12 keeps the band in tension and the lever 8 pressed clockwise relatively to the lever 7. Clockwise movement of the lever 8 causes the band 9 to grip and the brake to be applied and held on by a spring-pressed detent 17 engaging the ratchet wheels 4, 5. The brake may be further applied by moving the lever anticlockwise to disengage the band and when the lever 8 engages an adjustable stop 13 on the lever 7, the levers move as one back to their original position. The lever 8 is then moved forward again to operate the brake mechanism further. The lever 8 is provided with a trigger 14 connected to the detent 17 by a lover 16 and a rod 15 pivotally mounted in alignment with the axis of the shaft 2. To release the brake the lever 8 is moved forward to take the reaction of the brake mechanism and to allow the detent 17 to rise on the ratchet, the detent 17 is released by the trigger 14, and the brake can now be released gradualiy by hand. A tailpiece 19 on the lever 7 eventually engages a stop 20, stopping the lever 7, the lever 8 may now be moved slightly back to allow the drum 6 to slip through the band, releasing the brake gently.
