Abstract

278,422. Plum, J. July 5, 1926. Force-transmitting mechanism; fluid-pressure. -The front-wheel brakes and the rear-wheel brakes of an automobile are operated through link mechanism by a single source of power, the point of application of which on the link mechanism is adjustable by the driver during the running of the vehicle to divide the power transmitted to the front-wheel brakes and the rear-wheel brakes in the proportion desired. The bar 32, Fig. 10, is connected at one end to the front-wheel brakes and at the other end to the rear-wheel brakes and is provided with an arcuate portion having for centre the pivotal connection of a pull-rod 34 with the foot-pedal 33. The other end of the pull-rod is provided with a transverse opening adapted to be moved over the arcuate portion of the bar 32 by a hand-control connected by a cable 40 to a cap 35 covering the opening in the end of the pull rod 34. A return spring 44 is provided. The bar 32 is loosely journaled in bearings 31 carried by arms one of which in the case of mechanically-operated brakes is fixed to a bar 51 operating the front wheel brakes, the other arm being journaled on the bar 51 and connected by a rod 57 to a lever 55 on a bar 52 operating the rear wheel brakes. When hydraulic transmission is used the arms are both loosely journaled on a bar and one is connected to the piston of the pressure cylinder connected by piping to the pressure cylinder of the front-wheel brakes and the other to that of the rear-wheel brakes. In a modification of the invention the two connections 34<11>, 78<1>, Fig. 16, from the bar 32 are connected to the ends of an unequalizer bar 81 adapted to be moved by hand control so that different parts of a reduced portion of the unequalizer bar are engaged by the foot-pedal 33. The unequalizer bar may be replaced by a lever having a slot engaged by the pedal 33 and the rods 34", 78<1> are arranged symmetrically. The hand controlling means for varying the position of the, connections to the bar 32 may comprise a rod adapted to slide longitudinally in a guide in the instrument board and having ratchet teeth engaged by a pivoted spring latch released by a hand-operated push rod. An oscillating handcontrolling means comprises a winding-drum 69, 5, 14 'keyed to a shaft carrying a handle 62 and journaled in a plate 59 in the instrument board. The cable connection is attached to the winding down which carries a flange having ratchet teeth 71 engaged by a latch finger 73, Fig. 15, extending laterally from a hand-releasable spring-stud 74 passing through the instrument board.
