Abstract
365,080. Yarn &c. winding machines. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A. Sept. 10, 1930, No. 30936/31. Convention date, April 26. Divided on 362,974. [Class 120 (ii).] In a drum winding machine for yarn &c. in which a package support is movable towards and away from the driving drum, the package is moved by a rocking arm or member positively coupled thereto and actuated by a dog carried by the arm and moved, when the yarn breaks or the package attains a predetermined diameter, into the path of a continuously rotating cam, means being provided to move the dog out of the path of the cam when the winding operation has been arrested. Yarn &c. from a supply bobbin D placed upon a spindle 115 of a rotatable holder 114 passes through a wire guide 134, guide 133, and slub-catcher 132, between tensioning discs 125, over a porcelain covered pin 136 and beneath the pin 140 of a vertically movable guide member 141 as described in Specification 362,974 to a traversing drum 7 which drives the spool C as described in Specification 339,679, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.]. The spool C is carried by a pivoted arm 11 having a depending leg 18 resiliently secured to a rackbar 20 which it thrusts forwards as the spool C increases in diameter, teeth 25 on the bar passing over a pawl 26 on a two-armed lever or rocking arm 27 pivoted at 30 to the main frame of the machine. A dog 33 depending from the inner end of the arm 27 is normally held out of the way of a continuously rotating cam 35 by a spring 55 secured at its other end to a lever 48 pivoted on a pin 42 which is secured to ears 39 on a plate 38 on the outer end of the arm 27. The plate 38 is normally substantially vertical to act as a guard for the yarn &c. which passes of a bail 45 pivoted at each side on a pin 42. One leg of the bail extends beyond the pivot and engages the lever 48 to prevent it from moving inwards. Failure or breakage of the yarn allows the bail to move outwards, the lever 48 then moving inwards and permitting the dog 33 to fall into the path of the cam 35. The cam 35 raises the dog and with it the inner end of the rocking arm 27 causing the pawl 26 to pull forwards the rack-bar 20 and raise the spool C from the drum 7. The movement of the arm 27 displaces the plate 38 until a shoulder 71, Fig. 4, on a starting handle 65, pivoted to the frame at 66, drops behind a recess 69 in the plate and locks the arm 27 in its displaced position. As the outer end of the arm 27 drops, the lever 48 engages a fixed cam surface 57 and stretches the spring 55 so that, as soon as the dog 33 is freed from the cam 35, it pulls the dog out of the path of the cam. To reset the device, the starting handle is raised clearing the shoulder 71 from the recess 69 and raising the rack-bar 20 clear of the pawl 26 by means of a stud 78 on an arm 77 rigid with the handle. To stop the machine when the spool has attained a predetermined size, there is adjustably secured to the rack-bar 20 a bracket 95 formed with a ledge 94, the underside of which is engaged by a latch 92 pivoted to an extension 87 of a sector-shaped weight 82. The weight 82 is loosely pivoted on the pivot of the dog 33 and is restrained from dropping by the latch 92. As the spool fills, the ledge 94 is drawn over the latch until it is clear thereof, whereupon the weight drops and, by means of a stud 83 on it, moves the dog 33 into the path of the cam 35, stopping the machine.
