[Class 83 (iv).] Winding; welding.-Apparatus for supporting coils of wire &c. particularly in a machine for making wire fabric as described in Specification 364,127, comprises pairs of spaced reels 1 having their axes horizontal or inclined and pairs of reels 3 disposed immediately above the reels 1 and preferably having their axes vertical. Reels 1 are disposed along either side of a pit 2 and in the wire fabric-making machine take the coils for the line wires. The reels 3 mounted on brackets 4 supported on parts 5 take the coils of wire from which the wire locks for the junctions of the line wires and stay wires are formed. Posts 5 are connected by cross-bars 6 supporting a frame 7 with a trolley-way for welding apparatus 8 for joining up the ends of the used wire coils with the ends of new coils. The stay wire is drawn from a reel 9, severed into lengths, and fed into position across the line wires by suitable mechanism such as that described in Specification 364,557. Reels 1 are preferably of the kind described in Specification 364,556, the reels being stationary and the wire led therefrom through an eye in the end of a rotary arm 19 and through a slot in an axial shaft 20, the pull of the wire as it leaves the reel causing the arm to rotate. Reels 3, Fig. 4, are of skeleton formation and to prevent the coils flying off are provided with a cover 11 automatically unlocked on removal and locked on replacement by dogs 12 pivoted to a ring 15 and connected to a handle 13 by pins and slots 16, 17 so as to be moved thereby into locking engagement with a ring 14.
