[Class 146 (i).] In a visible card index in which the cards k are slotted at m to provide tongues n adapted to engage side guides f, f and have interlocking tongues o intermediate the sides, the assembled cards are held in position by the engagement of the top card either with one of a series of slits r in the backing member or with a metal clip. The metal clip may be one of a series of staples fixed to the backing and shaped similarly to the slits r or it may be a clip slidable on a riband fixed longitudinally of the backing. A strip q stitched to the side guides at z determines the position of the lowest card of the series. The backing is in the form of a cover adapted to hold two series of cards and consists of an outer sheet a of flexible material such as manilla, and an inner sheet b stitched thereto at e, the outer edges of the sheet b being turned in to form the side-guides f. A strip of similar material g is secured centrally by stitching h, i, to form the guides f<1>. Each card k has a hinge line formed by perforations l, and the slots m are elongated with their major axes parallel to the hinge line. The top edge may be reinforced by a strip of adhesive linen tape.
