[Class 120 (iii).] Artificial silk is wound so as to produce a plurality of cheeses adjacent one another on the outer edges of radially movable bars of a spool body, the inner edges of the bars resting on a conical mandrel which holds the bars in an outwardly displaced position against the action of a spring. The mandrel may be shaped as a truncated cone, the thinner end of which is formed with a conical point co-operating with the edge of a bore of the spool body for centring the mandrel. As shown in the drawings, radially movable bars 2 on a cylindrical spool body 1 are held together and urged towards the centre by resilient rings 3 made for example of rubber. The spool body has a bore 4 which receives a mandrel 5. The mandrel is provided at one end with a handle 6 and at the thinner end it has a conical point 7 which engages the edge of a bore 8 of the extension 1a. The inner sides of the longitudinal bars 2 are tapered in accordance with the inclination of the exterior surface of the mandrel. When the mandrel is inserted, the bars are pressed outwards. The threads are wound on the expanded winding device so that several coils W are simultaneously formed. For removal of the coils, the mandrel 5 is withdrawn, whereupon the bars 2 are moved inwards by the action of the rings 3, thus enabling the coils to be slid off. Instead of the resilient rings 3, an elastic covering 10, for example of rubber, may be employed as shown in Fig. 4. This covering completely surrounds the bars and is fastened at each end to the spool body 1 by a metal ring 11.
