[Class 138 (ii).] A washing machine comprises a plunger 6 which is axially reciprocated within a cylinder 4 which may form part of or be removably carried by a tub 5, as in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. Apertures 8, 9 are formed at the top and bottom of the cylinder whereby liquid is discharged at each end alternately and those at the bottom may communicate with upwardly directed apertures 11 in a conduit 10, Fig. 1. A guard 12 prevents the clothes &c. from being carried into the lower apertures, and in the form shown in Fig. 6 the guard also encloses the upper apertures. The size of the apertures may be varied by means of a sleeve 21, Fig. 7. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the lower end of the cylinder is open and communication with the liquid through passages 16 formed in a plate 13, and in the form shown in Fig. 8 the apertures at the upper end of the cylinder are constituted by the upper end which is left open as shown.
