Abstract

A solid fertilizer is directly obtained by treating solid calcium acid phosphates with a solution or melt of ammonium nitrate and ammonia with or without water in subordinate amount. The solution of ammonium nitrate in ammonia may be prepared by adding solid ammonium nitrate to aqueous or anhydrous ammonia, by treating solid ammonium nitrate with gaseous ammonia or by treating nitric acid, e.g. of 40-85 per cent strength, with excess ammonia either liquid or gaseous. Other fertilizing salts or inert materials, e.g. sand, may be added before, during or after the treatment with ammonium nitrate solution. Specification 339,969, [Class 111, Sewage &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3)(a) states that any solid acid phosphatic material may be treated with ammonium nitrate in this way. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
