Abstract

358,587. Track apparatus for stopping trains. STEVENS, R. J., Dunoon, Coombe Lane, Kingston Hill, Surrey. July 7, 1930, Nos. 13383/31 and 13384/31. Divided on 358,516. [Class 105.] The motor of a Dieselelectric locomotive is supplied from a Ward-Leonard generator, the field of which is in circuit with a thermionic valve for control thereby. The grid potential of the valve is varied by an iron shield manually movable between the primary and secondary of a transformer to alter the coupling therebetween and so to vary the secondary voltage, the swing of which is applied to the grid. An iron plate 56, located at the side of the track, may be raised from a signal-box, so that as the locomotive passes, it projects between the primary and secondary of another transformer suspended under the locomotive. The coupling between the transformer windings is thus reduced so that the grid swing of another valve is also reduced and this causes the locomotive to slow down to a creeping speed. A second shield on the track causes the brakes to be applied fully and the locomotive brought to rest.
