Abstract
Sulphuric ester salts of leuco-4 : 6-dichlor-61-methoxythioindigo are made by treating the leuco compound of the dyestuff with sulphur trioxide or an agent yielding sulphur trioxide in the presence of a tertiary base, and converting the acid sulphuric ester thus obtained into stable salts. In an example, the leuco compound is treated with chlorsulphonic acid in a mixture of dimethylaniline and chlorbenzene; the product, obtained by salting out in the form of the sodium salt, gives deep scarlet red shades when dyed or printed on vegetable or animal fibres and developed with oxidizing agents. The parent dyestuff is made by condensing a 2-anil of 2 : 3-diketodihydro-6-methoxythionaphthene with 4 : 6-dichlor-3-oxythionaphene (made by treating 3 : 5-dichlorphenylglycollic chloride with aluminium chloride) or by condensing a 2-anil of 4 : 6-dichlor-3-oxythionaphene with 6-methoxy-3-oxythionaphene.
