[Class 138 (i).] A single conveyer carries the bottles through a series of compartments, in which the various soaking, washing, and rinsing operations are performed. A row of bottles is placed in the corresponding holders 6 at each forward step of the conveyer, which takes them from the loading position upwards and then successively into compartments 3, 3<1>, 3<2>, 3<3>, 3<4> in which they are soaked, washed, and rinsed. In the rinsing chamber 3<4>, the conveyer is upwardly inclined, as shown, the bottles being carried through this chamber in a vertical position with the mouth downwards. The cleaning liquid in some or all of the chambers is heated by steam coils. A preliminary spray 12 in the rinsing chamber is connected to the water main, a group of jets 13 to a pump, and groups 14, 15 to the water mains. The jets 13, 14 spray internally, and are raised and lowered by lever and link mechanism synchronously with the conveyer movement. The conveyer is intermittently driven from a motor by worm gearing, eccentric, and ratchet mechanism. Each row or battery of bottle holders contains a gridlike frame 23 with a cross member for each bottle to maintain it in position on the conveyer. The frames 23 are capable of transverse movement to free the bottles for insertion or removal and are operated by hand or by cam mechanism. Before reaching the first internal spray, the frames 23 are moved out of position and repositioned after the second internal spray. The internal spray mechanism, delivery mechanism 25, and the grid-like frames 23 are of known type.
