Abstract

Carbon compounds, particularly carbon monoxide and the exhaust gas of Diesel engines, are completely oxidized by treatment with free oxygen in presence of a manganite of a heavy metal, earth metal, or rare earth metal, or a mixture of such manganites. The manganites of iron, nickel, cobalt, copper, zinc, and cadmium are particularly suitable, also mixtures of copper manganite with cobalt oxide or iron hydroxide or metallic iron, zinc, or aluminium. The catalysts may be prepared by treating manganese dioxide with a metal salt solution, or by precipitation from a solution containing the metal salt and a salt of manganese with the simultaneous action of oxidizing agents such as potassium, permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, &c. Several examples are given.ALSO:The Provisional Specification describes the partial oxidation of carbon compounds by means of free oxygen, using catalysts comprising manganites of the heavy metals, earth metals, or rare earth metals. Manganites of iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and cadmium are specified; also mixtures of copper manganite with cobalt oxide, iron hydroxide, or metallic iron, zinc, or aluminium, Reference is made to the conversion of methane to formaldehyde, of alcohol to acetaldehyde, and of toluene to a mixture of benzaldehyde and benzoic acid.
