Abstract
354,836. Winding wire and like strand material. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A. (Assignees of Wolf, E. A. de; 526, Park Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) May 16, 1930, No. 15155. Convention date, May 17, 1929. [Class 120 (ii).] In a drum winding-machine for wire and like strand material the winding-spindle 25 carrying the spool S is mounted in an elbow frame 26 pivoted about a shaft 40 and is positively coupled by gearing 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75 carried on the frame and enclosed in a casing 88, and by skew gears 90 and worm gearing 95 on a shaft 80 with the traverse gear, which, as shown, comprises a cam drum 100, so that the wire is wound at a constant linear speed and the ratio of the rate of traverse to the angular speed of winding-spindle is constant. The gears 65, 70 are change gears so that the ratio of the speed of the winding-spindle and of the speed of traverse may be varied in accordance with the diameter of the wire. A latch-lever 42 is arranged to hold the frame in position with the coil or package out of contact with the driving-drum as required. The winding-spindle is mounted in ball bearings in a hub 27 and the spool is secured thereon by a coned nut 35. The traverse carriage slides on parallel rods 107, and the material is guided by grooved sheaves 125 carried by an arm 121, which is adjustable against the action of a spring 126 by means of a thumb-screw 117 so as to align the sheaves with the flanges of the spool.
