Abstract
483,356. Winding thread &c. DECOMBE, G. May 5, 1937, No. 12843. [Class 120 (ii)] A guiding-device for winding thread, wire, rope, chain, and the like on to spools or bobbins comprises a member mounted on an arm displaceable relatively to the spool for guiding the wire &c. directly onto the spool and having a heel part adapted to bear on the spool or a layer of wire &c. wound thereon and to be engaged laterally .by the turn just wound, the movement between the guide member and spool being caused solely as the result of such lateral engagement and the rotation of the spool; the wire &c. is suitably tensioned and passes through the guide member so as to be guided thereby directly on to the spool at a point adjacent the previous turn. As shown, the guide member g is formed as a spout at the end of the arm a with a heel part h which is held in contact with the underlying layer d on the spool e by the tension of the wire b which passes to the member g over a number of pulleys i freely slidable along rods j in a support n also carrying the rod k to which the arm a is fixed; the rod k is rotatable and slidable in the support n, is braked by springs o and may be curved so that the guide member at the end of its traverse is not prevented from contacting with the flanges of deformed spools. The spout may be replaced by a roller at the end of the arm a, the lower rim of the roller constituting the heel part of the guide member or the spout and arm may be replaced by a roller of large diameter rotatable and slidable on the rod k which is then carried by pivoted arms. In another form, the arm a is attached to a forked member freely rotatable on a sleeve loosely mounted on a curved bar carried by the support n and the sleeve carries a pulley around which the wire is led to the spout at the end of the arm. In a further form, the arm a is mounted frictionally by a pivot in a frame pivoted in the support n, the arm oscillating about the pivot which is disposed at right-angles to the pivoted frame; the wire is led to the spout around a pulley slidable along a bar fixed in the support. For winding large wires or cables or covered cables the guide member takes the form of a grooved pulley at the end of the arm and the heel is formed by a roller with rounded edges pivoted in the arm. In another arrangement, the arm carrying the spout is pivoted but does not slide and the spool is arranged to move in the direction of its axis. Flangeless spools may be wound by controlling the relative sliding movement between the guide member and spool by stops and the sliding bar k may be replaced by a small flexible chain mounted on rollers.
