Abstract

353,222. Tempering. STIRLING, C., 16, Bents Drive, Ecclesall, Sheffield, and FOX & CO., Ltd., S., Stockbridge Works, near Sheffield. July 2, 1930, No. 20105. [Class 72.] An apparatus for bending and quenching the leaves of laminated springs comprises a carrier mounted on a horizontal axis in a quenching tank and provided with a number of equally spaced pairs of adjustable serrated bending dies, preferably three, so arranged that on rotation of the carrier the leaves are passed longitudinally and obliquely into the quenching medium and during quenching are held obliquely so that convection currents are not interfered with and a free circulation of quenching medium occurs longitudinally of the leaf. The carrier 1, which is mounted on an axis 2 in the quenching tank 18, is provided with an upstanding flange 4 having strengthening webs 5 and perforations 7 and with socket guides 10 and threaded bosses 12 for the movable dies 8 and their adjusting screws 11a. The movable dies each consist of a pair of serrated plates 8<1>, 8<11> secured by bolts 20 through distance pieces 14 to guide members 9, and the fixed dies each consist of a pair of serrated plates 61, 6<11> secured to the carrier by bolts 19. The dies engage the leaves at a number of points near the edges thereof to allow a free circulation of quenching medium. The carrier is rotated one third of a revolution at each stage so that the obliquity of the leaves is reversed in consecutive quenching stages. The carrier may be rotated by hand or mechanically.
