Abstract
347,781. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, London.- (Protectall Motor Signal Inc. ; 107, East Washington Street, Syracuse, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 11, 1930, No. 4617. [Class 118 (ii).] Relates to direction signals for use on motor vehicles of the kind which are operated by hand and automatically nullified by the return movement of the steering wheel. The signal may be an arrow on an illuminated disc 1 which is rotated through 90 or 270‹ to give the " left " or " right " signals, by the movement in opposite directions of a hand-lever 21, which turns a cam 30 on a spindle 28 and actuates a wire 8 through a member 34 bearing on the cam. The signal disc 1 is actuated by a toothed segment 4 controlled by the wire 8 and a returning spring 7. The tail-light 10 illumiantes the disc, and a stop-light 11 actuated by the brake is included in the casing 12. On moving the hand-lever 21 to give a signal, the spindle 28 is moved vertically up, by a spring 37 and a release action of the cam 30, to bring the upper arm 25 of a pivoted lever 24 into the path of abutments 26 on the steering wheel. The initial movement of the steering-wheel merely rocks the lever 24 idly, but the return movement re-sets the hand-lever 21 owing to an abutment 27 engaging the lever 24. In a modification, the hand-lever is a resilient switch arm for controlling the operation of a reversible electromotor for setting the signal.
