Abstract
529,814. Controlling and steering motor forecarriages. RANSOMES, SIMS & JEFFERIES, Ltd., and MATHERS, H. June 8, 1939, No. 16828. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (v)] In an electric truck having a motor forecarriage 1 comprising a motor 6 mounted on a turntable 3 and driving a single wheel 2 supporting the turntable, the forecarriage is steered by movement of a handle 8 about the turntable axis X-X and the motor and brake are controlled by movement of the steering handle about a horizontal shaft 10, the handle when released by the driver being returned by a spring 14 to the position in which the power is cut off and the brake is applied. The handle is secured to arms 9 on the shaft 10 mounted on the turntable, the shaft having a segment 12 driving a pinion 13 on the spindle of the motor controller 7. An arm 17 on the shaft 10 is connected by a Bowden wire 18 to the brake (not shown). The different speed positions of the controller may be indicated to the driver by means of a notched disc 20, the notches being engaged by a roller 24 on an arm 22 controlled by a spring 25. The motor 6 may be reversible or the truck may be reversed by turning the turntable through 180 degrees, the driver then controlling the truck by walking behind it and moving the handle 8 as required.
