[Class 23.] Density separotors ; treating substances with liquids. - In an apparatus for the treatment of gases to obtain physical or chemical changes the gas is distributed by a ring of nozzles through which it emerges at right-angles to a rotating impact surface; suspended particles are thrown outwards and the gas is drawn inwards to a central discharge pipe. The casing 11 encloses a chamber 1 provided with a series of nozzles 4 and an entry pipe 2. The impact surface 5 is formed by a metallic cup which can be rotated by any suitable means. The gas stream passes through the entry 2 and nozzles 4 and impinges on the surface 5. Any precipitation products or liquid particles are thrown by centrifugal force to the casing 11, and are discharged through the outlet 12, while the purified gas passes out through the central outlet 8. A film is formed on the surface 5 by liquid supplied through the pipe 10; this film assists in carrying the suspended particles outward, or it may effect some chemical action with the gas passing through the apparatus. Injectors or sprayers 14 are placed at the top of the casing for the supply of steam or any suitable liquid to clean the casing, or to heat or cool the gas supplied, or for the supply of a solvent in an atomized condition when desirable. In some cases the gas itself may contain sufficient moisture to form a film on the surface 5 and no liquid need then be supplied through the pipe 10. The surface 5 near the nozzles 4 may have radial or concentric grooves, and the nozzles may have a lip extending inwards towards the axis of the machine. A quantity of gas, after treatment, may be returned through an automatic, regulator to the entry pipe 2 so that the speed of the gas from the nozzles 4 is constant. The nozzles 4 may be replaced by a continuous circular slit.
