Abstract
267,858. Alexander, W. Dec. 11, 1926. Density separators.-A vortex type separator used as a liquid purifier has a chamber of circular cross-section with an axial outlet for oil or impurities, and an inclined entry passage to promote a rotary motion in the mixture as it enters the chamber. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the mixture is conveyed to the apparatus by the pipe 1 and passes into the separator chamber 2 through the annular space provided with inclined vanes 3. The water passes out through the annular outlet 5, which may be vaned, and the oil and light impurities are thrown by the vortical movement to the centre. The oil outlet 8 passes through the centre of the top cover and is connected to the pipe 9; an annular baffle 17 is fixed round the outlet 8 to prevent oil from spreading outwards when the flow of the mixture stops. To counteract the drag of the water on the oil particles the fixed vanes 12 are arranged to impress an upward component on the liquid as it rotates round them. In the modification shown in Fig. 2. the entry pipe 4 and water exit pipe 6 are inclined to assist the rotation of the liquid. The oil outlet 8 has fixed vanes and the discharge pipe 9 passes through the bottom of the separator. The fixed vanes 12 are replaced by the annular guide 13. In another modification the water outlet is an annular space at the periphery of the base, and the wall of the chamber is conical at its lower end.
