Abstract

6167. Ernst, A. April 15, 1908, [Convention date]. Separators for gaseous substances.-The gas is subjected first to spray of water or steam, and then to beating and centrifugal action, it is then passed upwards between water-bearing shelves and there subjected to a beating, spraying, and whirling action and to successively purer supplies of water. In the apparatus shown, gas enters by an inlet A and meets a spray of water or steam from a nozzle G. The gas then passes by a pipe A" into an inverted cup C, rotating at a high speed, and then downwards between the pipe A<11> and the cup C, being there subjected to a beating action by blades E, E<1>, F secured to the cup and pipe respectively. The outer surface of the cup carries annular shelves J with depending vanes K, between which shelves are inclined shelves L secured to the outer casing H. Water from a nozzle 0 in the outlet pipe N falls on to the uppermost shelves J, L and alternately drips from one inclined shelf on to a rotating shelf and is thrown back to the next lower inclined shelf. The gas passes upwards in a sinuous course between these shelves, and is thus subjected to successively purer supplies of water, and at the same time is beaten by the vanes K. The water, carrying absorbed by-products such as ammonia, flows by a pipe I to a tank B having an overflow B'. After passing through this apparatus, the gas is preferably dried by passage through a similar apparatus without sprays. Other liquids may be used instead of water.
