Abstract

Esters of sulphonated unsaturated fats and oils are obtained by treatment of the latter with a monohydric alcohol and sulphonation, in either sequence. An esterification catalyst e.g. an acid or an acid-salt may be used in the esterification step. In examples: (1) castor oil is re-esterified by heating with butyl alcohol in the presence of gaseous hydrochloric acid and is sulphonated with concentrated sulphuric acid: (2) castor oil is sulphonated in the presence of ether, by means of chlor-sulphonic acid and is then treated with iso-propylalcohol, the sulphuric ester of dihydroxystearic acid esterified in the carboxy group being the principal product. Specifications 298,559, 313,160, and 315,832, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 313,966, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.].
