Abstract
336,623. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 15, 1929. Halogenated higher fatty acids.-Saturated or unsaturated fatty acids containing more than eight carbon atoms in the molecule, and which may contain hydroxy groups, are treated with halogens or a mixture of a chlorate and hydrochloric acid, whereby at least three halogens enter the molecule, one at least of which replaces a hydrogen atom by substitution. According to examples, trichlorinated-, tetrabrominated- and hexachlorinated-ricinoleie acid and a trichlorinated oleic acid are thus' obtained by direct halogenation. A pentachlordihydroxystearic acid is also obtained by direct treatment of the parent substance with chlorine. In further examples, a solution of ricinoleic acid in carbontetrachloride is treated with chlorine, while cooling, until a product contaning 16 atoms of chlorine in the molecule is obtained. A heptachlorinatedricinoleic acid, a tetrachlorinated oleic acid and a hexachlorinated stearic acid are similarly obtained, using carbon tetrachloride solutions' of the parent fatty acids. The chlorination of stearic acid, by suspending the latter in aqueous sodium or potassium chlorate and introducing gaseous or aqueous hydrochloric acid is also referred to. The products are oils, generally having adhesive properties, or plastic or resinous substances.
