Ball and like mills.-In a ball mill means are provided above the horizontal axial plane to direct the balls inwardly so that they fall to the lower part of the cylinder. The cylinder 3 is rotatably supported by hollow trunnions 2 in which are mounted hollow trunnions 4 connected at each end to internal and external arms 7, 8 respectively. The internal arms 7 are connected by a plate 5 which deflects the balls to the lower part of the cylinder and the external arms 8 are provided with slots and adjusting bolts 9 to position the plate 5, the bolts are adapted to be sheared when an obstruction occurs between the plate 5 and cylinder 3. The cylinder 3 is revolved fast enough to maintain the balls o in contact with the cylinder through centrifugal force. The front part of the plate 5 may be hinged and maintained in position by a spring, or the whole plate may be hinged intermediate of its length and be forced outwardly by a spring against a stop. In a further modification he plate may be supported slidably on a rod, the upper serrated edge being forced into contact with the cylinder by a spring on the rod. The internal arms may be supported on a steel bar passing through the cylinder trunnions and this bar may be hollow and perforated to carry away the ground material by air currents.
