Abstract

333,042. Jones, O. C. July 24, 1929. Magnetic separators.-A compound magnet a formed of a number of electromagnets of horseshoe shape arranged so as to leave a slot b is secured inside, and to, a drum c adapted to be rotated on a spindle by a belt c<1> passing over a drum d, provided with a turning handle d<1>. The belt c<1> is attached to the drum c at j<1>. On the frame carrying the drum c are provided two stops e e<1> between which an arm f attached to the drum c or its spindle, moves, allowing the drum c to be moved by the operation of the handle d<1> through half a revolution. The arm f is provided with an extension h which, when the drum is rotated, engages the handle of a switch g controlling the supply of current to the electromagnets and then de-energises them. The magnetic particles will then be discharged into a receptacle v. When the drum c is rotated again the extension h will operate the switch g again, and energise the magnets, and come to rest when the arm f engages the stop e. A shield i attached to the belt c<1> and drum c diverts the material into a receptacle v<2> during the period, when the drum c is being rocked. In a modification two drums are operated so that one is in operation when the magnets of the other are de-energised and vice-versa.
