Abstract

324,288. Baker, G. B., Baker, H. B., and Baker, E. C. March 19, 1929. Cutting nails; reeling.-In the manufacture of cut brads the brad plate is presented to the machine cutters in the form of a strip fifty to two thousand or more feet in length, which is freed from grease, coated with lime, and wound into a coil supported adjacent the brad machine, the end strip of the machine being drawn from the coil and fed to the cutters with a yielding pressure. The coil C is supported at the top of a standard 17<x> on arms 37<x> on a disc 36<x> ; the inside of the coil is engaged by adjustable stops 38<x> on the arms 37<x> and the outside by rollers 41<x> on a cover plate 40<x>. The strip B from the coil passes through a bell mouth G' along a guide G to the reversing barrel 14, which is reversed as usual by straps 28, 29 wound in opposite directions round the barrel and connected to arms on a lever 30 rocked at intervals by a link 32, and the strip is fed intermittently by feed rolls 42, 43 to the operative parts of the machine, such as the movable cutters 5, 6 and movable limiting stop 7 and the fixed cutter blade 4 mounted on the anvil block 3. The feed rolls are mounted in a casing 40<a> on the barrel 14, the upper feed roll shaft 41 carrying a ratchet wheel 47 coacting with a pawl 48 on a slide 49 with anti-friction rollers 54 engaging bent-over ends 61 of arms 59 on a shaft 55. A downwardly projecting arm 56 on shaft 55 is connected to a rod 56<a> passing through a fixed guide 56<b> and influenced by a spring 57 tending to rotate the shaft 55 clockwise. Shaft 55 carries another arm 61a connected by a link 62 to a lever 63 rocked by a cam 63<a> on the main shaft 2, which cam comes into operation to tension the spring 57 following the downward movement of the cutters. When cam 63a leaves lever 63 the spring 57 moves the pawl slide 49 forwards, thereby rotating the feed rollers 42, 43. At the same time the coil C is rotated by a link 30<x> connected to the lever 63 and to a rocker lever 27<x> operating a rod 26x connected to a lever 23<x> on the standard 17x carrying a pawl 24<x> engaging a ratchet wheel 20x faced with friction material 33x contacting with a flange 34x on the disc 36x supporting the coil. The feed rolls 42, 43 engage the strip resiliently under influence of a spring 41<a>, Fig. 5, and the upper roll may be replaced by a ball. On its way to the barrel the strip passes an indicator in the form of a roll 85 on a lever 84 adapted when the strip supply is exhausted to engage a contact 86 completing the circuit of a battery 87 to a lamp 88, and, if desired, a magnet 90 actuating mechanism to stop the machine; several such indicators 88 may be mounted on a board 89 to serve a number of machines. The strip also passes through straightening rolls 43x, 44<x>, Fig. 7. In a modification, Fig. 11, the coil is rotated by a sprocket 46x driven by a chain 47x, which constantly tends to rotate the coil-supporting disc 36x, but owing to slipping of the friction material 33x the coil is rotated only when the feed rolls are operating to advance the strip. In another modification, the coil supporting disc is rotated by a coil spring through a similar friction device. Instead of rotating the coil the strip may be drawn therefrom by feed rolls engaging the strip, as shown in Fig. 7, the upper feed roll being driven intermittently by a ratchet wheel and pawl lever 57<x> connected to the link 26<x>. Specifications 12726/87, [Class 89, Nails &c.], 19631/06, and 9382/14 are referred to.
